I don’t want to be The Ugly American

Every task I’ve had, every buddy who’s beach house I have visited – everywhere I have ever gone there has been temperature control

As I spent 6 weeks traveling the world, I tried my best not to be “the ugly American.” You see, Americans have a reputation worldwide for being brash and demanding everything their own way. “The Ugly American” is the genre of woman who goes to a foreign country and gets mad when no one there speaks English. You guess the genre of woman I mean! I did my level best to be gracious and humble, and respect the traditions of the native cultures. That said, when it came to a/c I did have to get a little ugly once or twice. As much as I want to be humble and respectful, the fact of the matter is that I have lived in a/c my entire life. When I cooked into the world at the hospital, it was completely air conditioned. My childhood beach house consistently had the window mounted air conditioning unit blasting on maximum. Every task I’ve had, every buddy who’s beach house I have visited – everywhere I have ever gone there has been temperature control. I guess that is just an American custom, because some of the sites I visit don’t even guess what an Heating plus A/C system is! Some people can live comfortably separate from a cooling system, despite the fact that I am just not one of those people. The greatest mind-blower of them all to me is that in these countries, most of the cars don’t even have a/c! Imagine driving around and standing in traffic on a 100 degree day, and your automobile doesn’t have a cooling system!
