I suppose it was made in 2003 so it is very close to being 20 years seasoned plus I bet it doesn’t have legitimately the most amazing efficiency compared to the latest Heating plus A/C machine technology out these days. I used to work on them myself so I could look at it plus see if there is something that looks awful on it, maybe save me some cash also. My dad was a Heating plus A/C machine supplier plus taught me a tremendous amount when all of us were finally working together plus I actually appreciate that from him. He is gone but his memory continues to live on through all of the things he taught me. Last winter, my local area experienced record low temperatures. We dealt with negative digits, brutal wind chill and constant snowfall. The forecast was constantly calling for snow flurries and blizzard conditions. My house felt chilly. Adjusting the thermostat didn’t solve the problem. The furnace seemed to be running non stop but not accomplishing anything. I noticed that certain rooms were colder than others, and there seemed to be a greater amount of dust floating in the air. When I was faced with a significant increase in my monthly heating bill, I called a local HVAC contractor to check out the furnace. He looked everything over and found a minor accumulation of dust within the inner workings. He then tested the ductwork and discovered that approximately 25% of our heated air was leaking out through holes and cracks at the seams. We needed duct sealing. I was a bit worried about the process. The duct system is made up of a network of pipes concealed inside the walls, ceilings and attic. I wasn’t sure how the professionals could access them without causing a huge mess and great deal of damage. The technician then explained a fairly recent innovation called Aeroseal duct sealing. They can now repair flaws in the ducts from the inside. First, the technician blocked off all of the supply and return vents. He then hooked up a machine that pumps pressurized air into the pipes. This air contains polymer particles that are non-toxic and adhesive. As the air escapes through the holes and cracks, the particles cling to the edges and gradually build up. It takes a couple of hours to ensure an airtight seal. The technician once again tested the operation of the ducts to verify the results. The Aeroseal process is warrantied for ten years.

Both heating and cooling are necessary, and we rely on temperature control just about year round. The majority of the houses are outfitted with a forced air furnace and a central air conditioner. Before building our home, I did a great deal of research into the various types of equipment. I looked into the pros and cons of each and focused on energy efficiency and cost savings. After a lot of debat, my husband and I chose a dual fuel system. The initial investment was quite a bit higher than a more conventional option, but lower monthly utility bills has helped to quickly deliver a return. A dual fuel system is the combination of a furnace and an electric heat pump. A heat pump is more expensive than an air conditioner but provides both heating and cooling capacity. During the warmer months, it operates similarly to an air conditioner, using refrigerant to pull heat out of the house. The benefits of the heat pump are realized when the weather turns colder. The heat pump is able to reverse the flow of refrigerant. It finds ambient heat in the outdoor air and uses it to heat the home. Because the heat pump doesn’t burn fossil fuels, it eliminates the drawbacks of fumes, hot surfaces, carbon monoxide and greenhouse gasses. By using existing heat, the system is wonderfully energy efficient. It costs much less to operate and has far less impact on the environment than the gas furnace. Once the outdoor temperature drops below freezing, the heat pump starts to struggle to keep up. The furnace automatically takes over, maintaining comfort for as long as necessary.

Because the air feels cooler, the response is typically to raise the thermostat setting. This actually worsens the problem and leads to higher energy bills and greater wear and tear on the furnace. The solution is a whole-home humidifier. The portable options are a great deal of work and can’t produce enough moisture to make much of a difference. A whole-home model installs directly into the heating system and introduces moisture as the air passes through. There are steam-style, fan-style and bypass humidifiers available. Because I have a larger home, I chose a steam-style humidifier. It uses electrodes to turn water into steam and provides a very natural source of humidity.
