I have been volunteering in various capacities throughout my life. Sometimes I volunteer at the shelter and cook for the people that come for dinner. Well, recently, I decided to volunteer and help some of the refugees who have come to our country recently. Anyway, what I do is I help the refugees get acclimated to life in the United States. I have discovered through this volunteering opportunity that I am a thousand times more blessed than I ever even realized. For example, almost none of the refugees has any idea about HVAC. They don’t come from a background where there is Heating and Cooling. In fact, many of them have never lived in anything other than a tent. I met one couple who were in a refugee resettlement camp in another country as children, they grew up in the camp in tents, fell in love, and got married all in the refugee camp. They never had a water heater, so their bathing was always cold. They never had Heating and Cooling, so if it was cold outside they built a fire oh, and if it was hot outside they tried their best to find shade and cool water. My entire life, I have always flipped the switch from heating to cooling or vice versa when the weather changed dramatically outside. I have never had to take a cold shower because I have always had a water heater. In fact, once the water heater was broken, and I left the house and went to stay at a hotel so I can have a water heater and hot shower. This experience with the refugees has made me quite grateful.

I adopted a dog last year after my previous dog passed away.

Her dog was a border collie, but I did get her at the shelter.

I went back to the same shelter and got the dog I have now. She’s really just a mutt, but mostly she is Pitbull. She’s a very lovely dog and she has charm to me from day one. Unfortunately, though, she does not get along with other dogs very well, and she’s unpredictable around most people. Well, not really most people, but men. She loves women, but she doesn’t seem to like men as much. Anyway, I do have quite a bit of arthritis and a couple of other conditions that make walking her rather difficult. Even so, I do my best. I try to take her to big fields where she can sniff to her heart’s content on a Long Leash. My favorite part of these little Outdoor Adventures with my dog is coming back home to the air conditioning. Even though this time of year is not super hot, I am hot natured and I feel like I have my own furnace going on inside my body most of the time. When I get back home, I am thrilled to be back in the AC. I normally have to rest, and kicking back and enjoying the air conditioning while the dog takes a nap is quite lovely for me. If it’s on the weekend, I also enjoy getting out a good book and reading it. Sometimes, I will set the thermostat to a really low temperature, and then I will snuggle underneath a blanket or throw. It’s nice to have strong AC blasting on you when you have been out giving your dog her exercise.

Growing up in the Northeast was a lot different than life here in the Southeast.

One of my favorite memories of Thanksgiving is taking the big glass jug of apple cider and putting it outside in the snow to get cold. We would then drink that cider with our meal. Even if we didn’t have snow by Thanksgiving, there was always enough natural cooling outside to get the cider nice and chilled before dinner. Anyway, I don’t really drink apple cider much anymore, since there are no apple orchards where you can go and get it, and the kind from the grocery store just isn’t as good. Even though it’s no longer possible to chill the drinks outside, this time of year is still lovely. Living in the south east has some advantages, after all. I do like the change of seasons, and I do wish it would get slightly colder, but I certainly don’t want to have to drive in snow. At this time of year, in my neck of the woods, we do have a bit of natural pulling going on most of the time. Often, I get to turn off the HVAC system altogether and open up the windows. That is my favorite thing to do. I’m sure the air conditioner doesn’t mind getting a little rest either! I also take this opportunity to call in the HVAC repairman. I set up an ac service call at this time of year to make sure that if I need the furnace, it will be working properly. This year, I haven’t needed to use the heater at all. It’s been kind of a blessing because I generally consider it more expensive to run the heating than to run the cooling. I’m not sure if it’s actually true or if it’s just my imagination, but the heater certainly seems to be pricey.

One of my favorite times of year is Autumn.

I live in the Southeast, and it’s hot and humid here almost all year long.

Often, though, once Autumn rolls around, we will have a little bit of natural cooling going on. Some years it’s better than others. This past year we had a nice Autumn with lots of natural Cooling in the air. I was able to turn off my HVAC system for almost 2 weeks. I was quite happy about it, as that saves money and also allows me to get fresh air into the house. Then, I decided that all of them were so much fun I needed to go on an adventure. This year, I chose for my adventure and apple picking weekend. I got in the car and put the dog in the back seat and headed off in a Northerly Direction. It was quite odd, though, because as I drove farther north it got hotter. That is very unusual, of course, and when I happened upon the apple orchard and hotel, I discovered that I really needed to blast the AC. In addition, I used the air conditioner in the car almost the whole way. Now that Autumn is over, I expected the weather in my little city to get even colder, and that would be fabulous because it would seem more like Christmas. Unfortunately, though, I have no need to turn on the furnace. In fact I don’t think I will be able to turn my thermostat settings from cooling to heating any more this year. It seems to be quite hot outside even at night oh, so I am being forced to use the air conditioner despite the fact that this is the week before Christmas.Even though I didn’t have the weather I preferred, my apple picking was certainly an adventure.
