Upgrading household appliances to wifi connectivity and automation system

Over the years, I’ve gradually replaced all of the outdated appliances in our home with Energy Star rated alternatives.

  • These modern options typically include wifi connectivity.

I have a washing machine, dryer, refrigerator, oven, sump pump and thermostat that all can be controlled through my smartphone. While being able to remotely operate everything from the coffee pot to the furnace is super convenient, the many different apps were getting a little overwhelming. When I started looking into a home security system, the company providing the installation suggested an upgrade to a home automation system. I hadn’t realized that automation systems were available for residential application. The price of the system wasn’t overly high and the benefits definitely make the investment worth it. Because of the home automation system, management of the various appliances is now bundled into a central hub. There is a device installed on the wall of the home and I have access via my smartphone. I only need the one interface to adjust and monitor a long list of equipment and systems. It makes programming, troubleshooting and day-to-day responsibilities much less stressful. I now get alerts when the kids arrive home from school, and I can make sure the doors are locked. I can start up the oven before I get home from work, andI get notified if the sump pump quits or the water heater ruptures. Plus, I’m saving a significant amount of money on energy bills through more conscientious operation of the furnace and air conditioner. I no longer heat or cool an empty house to the ideal temperature simply because I forgot to adjust the thermostat.
