Learning how to run faster

I have my personal trainer a few times a week stand right next to me on a treadmill watching my strides

Running isn’t something that comes natural to me. No matter how hard or often I run, I still can only manage to run at a 10 minute mile pace. I recently went to a personal training center and got a certified fitness expert to help me. I figured that maybe I was out of shape or certain muscles haven’t developed yet. Turns out I was running totally wrong. First, the trainer had me working on stretching before a run. Just up and running is a bad idea since I could have pulled a muscle and really injured myself. Next, the trainer emphasized proper footwear and good running gear. He also stressed to carry a camelbak if I went any sort of distance. Lastly, the two of us have been fixing how I run. I actually am in shape and have the endurance to run a long ways. The way I run is totally incorrect. The personal trainer has fixed how I hold my arms and the position my head sits in. He also told me that how I breathe while running will give me side cramps. The last and most important thing we are working on is my actual stride. A good runner extends from the hip all the way to the toes making a long stride. I only reach from the knee down. I have little baby strides and that is why I am so slow. I have my personal trainer a few times a week stand right next to me on a treadmill watching my strides. We do different sprinting drills trying to get my legs reaching. I am hopeful to run good someday.
