Getting into yoga

I began practicing meditation when I was a freshman at college.

  • I had gotten my hands on a book about Eastern Philosophy.

I started taking interest in documentaries about Buddhism, Taoism, and Hinduism. The interest continued to grow. Although I didn’t really understand what I was doing with meditation at first, I felt a sense of calm whenever I practiced it. I bought more books on meditation and searched around on the internet for more information and insight. I eventually joined a meditation group on campus that met every Saturday. I met my girlfriend through that meditation group. The two of us shared many of the same religious and philosophical beliefs. She was all about yoga. That was something I had never tried before. I was already a member at a fitness center in our town. I’d workout there four or five days per week. I knew that keeping in good physical shape helped with the balance I was hoping to achieve. I was into running, cycling and weight lifting. I’d heard about the yoga classes offered at the gym but never joined one of them. Once I started attending yoga classes with my girlfriend, I stopped concentrating on building muscle. I switched to toning my muscles through yoga poses. These poses require incredible balance and flexibility. They engage all different muscles while also focusing the mind. Yoga has had a positive impact on my life. I am no longer with the same girlfriend. We’ve completely lost touch. I’ve moved to the other side of the country. However, I continue to appreciate her for getting me involved with yoga.
