Electric heat pump was making a loud noise

We had been practicing the skit for weeks, and we would then present it to an audience after several weeks. We worked hard on the skit, then it was about social issues that I all struggle with or have experienced. After weeks of practicing, I took a few days off just to be in a good zen mood before the final presentation. The hotel I visited had amazing cooling systems from the high-quality comfort within the premises. We had a good time and also had time to relax, then on the big day, I was anxious but in control. We started acting and dramatizing our play, when the sound professional was supposed to cue the middle of the skit, the sound method failed but the electric heat pump stepped in by making a loud rumbling noise. The audience thought it was all part of the skit but I knew better, but later I learned that the cooling component had been straining to function and it happened to emit the noise. We contacted the HVAC business for cooling professionals to run repairs on the unit. The HVAC company asked us a series of questions concerning the machine including when the HVAC installation was done. This was to determine the style of cooling technology used. The management of the building had not kept up with quality AC service as advised by the cooling specialist from the cooling corporation. We also had the temperature control component upgraded to a Wi-Fi temperature control. To further help with indoor comfort, the professionals provided a service manual from the local service provider. It was a good thing the HVAC method stalled as it saved our skit.

The electric heat pump had a part in the skit

Dirty ductwork in the rental cabin

From the outside, the cabin was pristine and perfect in every way.

The windows, the paint, even the landscape around the long winding driveway, it all was so picturesque. Once we stepped inside, things were different. The website had not posted many pictures of the interior of the cabin, and now we saw why! It was not dirty, but it was shabby, and it smelled moldy. Always be super careful about your AirBnB rentals, people, or you can end up stuck in a dump like this cabin! When we went to turn on the central air conditioner, the smell only got worse. We came to learn that the cabin itself was quite clean, but the ductwork for that old, grimey air conditioner was the problem. Apparently the owners were only concerned about appearances, because once I removed the grate off one of the air vents, I saw how horrifically dirty the ductwork had gotten. These people had obviously never cleaned out the air ducts once, and there was a thick coating of dust and detritus all through the system. In general, ductwork in an HVAC system needs to be cleaned out every two to three years at least. I called up the rental agent to complain, and demanded a full refund. There would not be time for a cleaning of the air ductwork, and I felt it was unsafe for us to stay there for the weekend. I wanted a refund so I could check us into a nice motel with a nice, clean air conditioner, and start enjoying our weekend.

Date night stays home, thanks to air quality concerns

The last movie I saw in the theater was called “the Color Out of Space” .

It was a sci-fi horror movie with Nicholas Cage in it, and my wife and I had a great time watching it! Little did we know that after that one final Date Night society would be shut down for COVID, and we would not have the opportunity to go back to the movies for over a year! The movies have since opened up, but my wife and I still haven’t returned, mostly due to concerns over indoor air quality in the movie theaters.

Sitting in a small, confined area with a bunch of strangers, all breathing the same air being recycled through old, possibly dirty ductwork, seems like a recipe for catching COVID, so we have avoided going back to the movies since then. With all the modern tech we have at home, including 4K high definition and plasma screen large screen TV, there is little reason to go out in public. The novelty value of sitting in a movie theater seems trivial compared to the superior, clean air quality you can have at home, with your own private space and HVAC system. Not only does my smart thermostat give me precise control over the temperature, which is an improvement over the movie theater, but also there is far superior air quality. Without the influence of COVID, we would still be going to the cineplex for Date Night, but now that air quality is such an ongoing concern, we will just keep it in-house for the time being.

Trying to get the AC fixed

For a while my wife and I felt like the traditional “fish out of water.” We were city folk, trying to fit into rural small town life, and it took a little getting used to! Thankfully, the locals were all very kind people, even if a bit rough around the edges, and after a while they grew to embrace us and make us a part of their community.

Like I said, it was a little rocky at first, especially that first big crisis we encountered, when our home HVAC system broke down.

My wife tried to find a phone number for an HVAC repair service, but this far out in the country there was no such business! Instead we went to the only business in town that sold air conditioners, which was the small hardware store next to the gas station. They sold the small, portable kind of air conditioners, along with space heaters, and that was the closest thing to an HVAC shop she could find. Of course she didn’t want to buy a little unit, she wanted to track down someone who could get our central HVAC system back up and running. The man who ran the hardware store said that there were no certified HVAC repair techs in the town, which is why most people relied on the smaller units. Although we didn’t want to do it, my wife saw the sense in not putting up a fight, and just settling for the small AC unit for now. One day we could get the central HVAC fixed, but for now this would do.

We had an issue with our ductwork

After we moved into the bungalow, my wife Bess started feeling sick.

  • She was always prone to allergy attacks, but this was on another level! It was such a shame, because she was so excited to move into this place.

It’s on the gentle slope of a hill, overlooking a long, placid lake and a wide open plain of orchards. Truly a stunning landscape, and now it was our permanent view of the world! The air quality in this area was pretty good, and we could not figure out why Bess was having such an ill reaction to this place. Finally I took off an air grate to look into one of the air ducts, and there was our answer. First of all, the sides and floor of the ductwork was thick with ancient dust, who knows how long it had been collecting there? Second of all, there were hundreds of little pawprints in the dust meaning that at some point there had been animals living in the air ducts. I immediately called a local cleaning service and asked if they did deep cleaning of the ductwork. They referred me to an HVAC contractor, who had the tools and the skills for a total cleaning of all the air ducts and vents. Since the air ducts had not been cleaned in years, and there had been an animal presence in them, it was recommended that we have all the ductwork sterilized. It was not cheap, but once the ductwork was cleaned out, Bess got back to feeling like herself again.

Blasting the AC in the movie theater

When you go into a movie theater, it’s not far off from getting on an airplane.

In both cases, you enter a small, enclosed area, and sit shoulder-to-shoulder packed in with a bunch of people you’ve never met.

You sit there, breathing the same air with these strangers, for hours on end. It is a recipe for the spread of COVID or any other airborne virus, so it’s no wonder that most movie theaters had to close down. I am only getting back to work now after being closed down for almost a full year. The movie business is different now, with a much stronger emphasis on air quality and HVAC systems these days. Thanks to COVID, everyone worries about their air quality, because bad air could mean a long and uncomfortable sickness. Even with social distancing, and a lot fewer people in the theater, the HVAC system needs to be functioning at a very high level to keep everything feeling cool and clean. The big thing is that people feel that the air quality is clean. Perception is reality, so even if the air filters are dirty, cranking down the temperature and making people feel cold will trick them into thinking the air quality is better. At my theater I always change out the air filters on a regular basis, because I keep that system blasting to the max all day long. When the place is empty, I turn off the AC to give it a rest. But when customers are present, the AC never stops running for a single minute.

Trading an HVAC tune-up for a drum kit

By the time I was finished, that HVAC system looked and worked like it was brand new again, and the owner was more than happy to give me the drum kit my son wanted

I thought it was cool when my teenage son Jason wanted to start playing the drums. I wouldn’t even mind the noise from him practicing in the garage, because I find the sound of drums relaxing. The problem came when we wanted to buy him a drum kit, because these things cost as much as a car! Getting a couple of drums would be affordable, but an entire drum kit consists of a dozen or more drums and other things like cymbals, too. I talked to the owner of one of the local music stores, to try and work out a deal. I told him I was a certified HVAC tech, and could trade work for drums. Being the owner, this man was keen to save money where he could, and he knew that I was offering what could be thousands of dollars worth of HVAC work. We made a deal on the spot, and that weekend I went back with my work van and my HVAC tools and spent twelve hours tuning up his entire system. I even cleaned out the ductwork, because it hadn’t been done in many years. By the time I was finished, that HVAC system looked and worked like it was brand new again, and the owner was more than happy to give me the drum kit my son wanted. I told the man that I was open to future HVAC gigs, and was happy to work under the table for cash so neither one of us had to report it to the federal government or the IRS.

The HVAC system will not save you from COVID

One of the first businesses to fall during the COVID outbreak was the movie theater industry. When we had to stop gathering in groups, how could movie theaters stay around? When you go to the movies, you literally jam pack yourselves into a tiny room sitting shoulder to shoulder with strangers – this is a perfect recipe for spreading COVID! Well, thankfully the worst has passed, and my theater is now serving the public again. One thing I noticed is that during the shut-down people seemed to get a lot more interested in their air quality. Now that we are open again, I field a lot of questions about the HVAC system in the theater, and its impact on our air quality. What I can’t say to people is the truth – that the climate control system won’t save them, and the only way to have total safety for COVID was to stay home and watch movies on the TV. Of course I would never say that, it would be shooting my business in the foot, but it’s true. The air that people breathe out is recycled through the air filters of the HVAC system, but this is not a blanket immunity from harm. Being in a public place is always a risk, no matter how good the HVAC system is or how many air filters are being used. When you go to a theater, you are taking a risk, and although that risk is smaller than it used to be, it takes more than a good air filter to have true safety.

A loud air handler in the studio

My daughter is taking Band in her middle school, and decided that she wanted to play a French Horn.

  • I have never been involved with music at all, so I had no clue how much something like that would cost.

You could have knocked me over with a feather when I heard that even a used horn cost hundreds of dollars! I am not a rich man, and don’t have that kind of extra money laying around just for a middle school elective class! I talked to the owner of the music store, and asked if there was any way I could barter some HVAC work to get money off the price of that horn. It turns out that he had an unusual problem, and not enough money to get it fixed. There was a recording studio in the back of the music shop, and the HVAC system and air handler for the room was proving to be an issue. Even with the sound baffling on the walls, the air handler for the HVAC system was so loud that people could hear it on the recorded tracks! With that sort of background noise, the studio was basically worthless, because trying to record music without air conditioning would turn the place into a hot box! I told the man I could take apart his air handler, tune up his HVAC system, and have it running smoothly and quietly by the end of the day. In return for my valuable HVAC work, he was going to cut me a huge deal on the horn my daughter wanted.
