Skipping furnace maintenance

The cold winter temperatures and snow arrived unusually early this past year.

I wasn’t prepared.

It seemed as if one day we were swimming in the pool and grilling dinner on the patio, and the next there was snow on the ground. I was suddenly in a hurry to seal the house, find the snow shovels and ice scrapers and buy rock salt. I needed to call someone to plow the driveway, winterize the pool and make sure everybody’s winter boots still fit them. I thought about scheduling service for the furnace but then got busy and never did it. I made sure to replace the air filter before turning up the thermostat. I noticed a significant amount of dust coming from the vents and there was an odd smell to the heated air. I hoped that these concerns were simply caused by the heater sitting idle for nearly six months. However, as the winter progressed, the performance of the furnace steadily diminished. Because the outdoor temperature dropped down to negative fifteen, I wasn’t all that surprised that the furnace was struggling. The house felt slightly chilly, no matter how many times I adjusted the thermostat. When the heater started making a strange noise every time it cycled on, I got concerned. I finally called for a repair but needed to wait nearly a week for an appointment. By the time the technician showed up, there was barely any air coming from the vents. The technician took the system apart and found a significant accumulation of dust, dirt and grime. He said that the furnace malfunction was caused by a lack of maintenance in the fall.
