I went to work last night and there was a note on the break room door, and many of my co-workers and I were surprised to find out that the factory is going to stop production on the third shift, and I am really surprised by the news, especially since all of us have been running a third shift at this factory for the past 20 years. This particular factory supplies all of the Heating and Air Conditioning parts to hundreds of companies on the East Coast. This factory makes air conditioners, heaters, furnaces, heat pumps, media UV air purifiers, and air filters. I have been working third shift for the past eight years and I am not looking forward to moving to a new shift. Most of the guys that work at the Heating and Air Conditioning factory during the day look annoyed, and not only do they have to work with all of the directors and the executives, but they have the hottest temperatures and the most humidity. The factory makes Heating and Air Conditioning parts, but all of us barely have any air conditioning in the assembly shop. The people I was with and I have large overhead fans that remove some of the heat, but it’s still excessive during the day. If they really remove the third shift, I am going to do my best to go to nights instead of mornings. If I get forced to work on an afternoon shift I might take my brother up on an offer to work at his dealer, he is now working for a vehicle dealership and they need someone to change tires and oil. It’s not the most glamorous work, but it pays the same as the Heating & Air Conditioning factory.

Air purifiers are hard to find in the middle of nowhere
When you live in a small town, there are only a few businesses to meet the needs of everyone.
My family and I live in a small town with one gas station and one beer distributor.
The gas station has a deli that serves hot and cold subs and that place is the only restaurant in town. The closest grocery store with fresh produce, milk and bread is almost 17 miles away. It’s a two hour trip both ways and we rarely leave unless it’s important. Smoke in the area is causing a lot of trouble for my neighbors and I. We are experiencing a record number of pollutants in the air due to the burning of millions of acres of trees and brush.The smoke and contaminants can travel hundreds of miles, so we don’t need to be on top of the fire to feel it’s awful effects. The air is polluted heavily and it’s hard to find an air purifier in the middle of this Covid pandemic. People were already worried about the indoor air quality and this is an even bigger threat. Smoke inhalation causes multiple thousands of deaths each year when folks go untreated for symptoms.I couldn’t find an air purifier anywhere in town.. The hardstore offered to order one from the distributor, but I found one online even cheaper. I had to wait seven days for the product to arrive, but the air purifier really helps the indoor air issues. I’m thankful we found an affordable solution to our problem, even if we did have to order from Amazon.
DIY air purifier helps block the smoke
My family and I moved to the west coast about six months ago and we are already regretting the decision.
We have been living here for exactly 193 days and we have experienced a mudslide, torrential rains, an earthquake, and wildfires.
The family and I are not accustomed to poor indoor air conditions and the smoke is really affecting our breathing and health. I have been wheezing for weeks and my family are experiencing a cough, congestion, and restlessness. I tried to go to the hardware to find an air purifier for the house, but they were sold out of every model. We don’t live in a particularly big area, so I even went an hour outside my region and I still didn’t have any luck finding the right equipment. In fact, I couldn’t find anything on stock and even online sales were behind and two weeks on back order. I found some cool ideas online for DIY air purifiers and the hardware store had everything I needed to make something that would work. I bought several different air filters that would fit a box fan. I used two air filters to create a triangle space behind the fan and then I sealed up the edges with duct tape.We keep all the windows closed and the DIY air purifier is right near the front door. So far, it’s helping a lot. We still ordered an air purifier machine that will come three weeks from today. Until the fires are under control, the smoke and ash are going to be a problem every single day.
The amount of money we spend on heating is ridiculous
My wife wanted to move to the country after our son was born.
- She insisted that the city was no place to raise a child.
She didn’t want our son exposed to the mean streets and daily problems that real life people encounter, so I begrudgingly agreed to move to the burbs. We found an older, dilapidated plantation house on forty acres of property. My wife fell in love with the house as soon as she saw the old shutters and the interior fixtures. I thought the house was out of our budget especially with all the repairs that it needed. Once again, my wife talked me into making a decision that I knew I would regret. Now we are stuck with a mortgage on a house that requires multiple repairs. Our heating bill is through the roof. That is my major complaint right off the bat. We moved in the middle of November, I thought we should wait until the end of the school year but my wife insisted that we move into the new place before Christmas. She wanted to impress our friends and family with the new place and have a huge party. She put up thousands of lights all over the house. The heating bill and the electric bill were astronomical. The furnace didn’t keep the house very warm and we had to use a space heater in addition to the main furnace. I’m pretty sure the furnace is going to need repairs soon too, because $400 dollars seem unreasonable. Between the heating bill, the furnace repairs, and the electric bill, I’m starting to think we made the wrong decision with this house.
When the sun goes down, I have to turn on the heat
The weather in this neck of the woods has been very strange lately.
It seems like we are experiencing two different seasons at the same time.
During the day, the weather has been sunny with scattered clouds and blue skies. There has been a light breeze in the air. To be perfectly honest, the weather is totally perfect during the day. Unfortunately, as soon as the sun goes down the temperature starts to rapidly fall and the weather changes abruptly. Even though it feels like spring during the day, it definitely feels like fall or winter during the evening. I like to keep the windows open for a nice flow of cool air during the day, but I have to use a furnace during the evening. I have a small propane furnace that hates the house nicely. Not a propane furnace uses about 25 pounds of fuel every 2 or 3 weeks. It’s expensive to run the propane furnace, but I don’t have much choice when the nighttime temperatures are close to freezing. My little house needs heat and I refuse to spend thousands of dollars to upgrade to central heat. The propane furnace works just fine most of the time. The weather is erratic, but we only have a few more weeks of these temperature fluctuations. The weather person said it was due to an arctic front that lays in the valley at night but rises higher during the day. I don’t understand anything the lady says, but I hope she is right on the mark.

The question of whose life matters is a hot topic these days. When you look at it logically, the importance of one’s life cannot be fully judged until it has ended and that applies equally to all people. Another unavoidable truth of life is that it is not fair. Short people have a tough time on the basketball court while tall people struggle in an airplane. It usually balances out but some people who accomplish great deeds under tough circumstances remain unsung heroes outside their chosen field. One of those unsung heroes was Frederick McKinley Jones (1893-1961). A quick Google search will reveal that he was a man of humble roots, a bi-racial child in the days of Jim Crow and that he is considered a giant in the field of refrigeration. Of his 61 patents, 40 were related to refrigeration and air conditioning including one in 1943 for removable cooling units for compartments. He co-founded Thermo-King and developed HVAC systems for bus, shuttle, and passenger rail applications. The impact of Jones’ innovations are never truly appreciated until you think about the portable cooling units he designed. They helped preserve food, medicine and blood that was delivered to army hospitals and even open battlefields during WW 2. What makes Jones’ story more incredible is that he was a virtual orphan at the age of seven, was raised in a Catholic rectory, and got his first job as a cleaning boy at age 11. His life did not amount to much as a cleaner but when he died in 1961, his was a life that mattered more than almost anyones.
Great savings and fighting HVAC companies
I live in a small town, around here not a lot goes on and you don’t hear a lot of news.
As a matter of fact, it was so small that we only had one heating and air conditioner business.
At least for a while that is. Just a couple of months ago, another HVAC company moved into the area and ever since then there has been a price war. Both of the heater and a/c businesses are furiously competitive and are continuously trying to outdo each other by lowering their prices more and more. The customers are of course flocking to whoever has the best deals. Which I can understand. I mean, who wouldn’t want the most bang for their buck? This has caused the prices at both businesses to be very low. Way lower than what they should be. Now services that would normally cost hundreds of dollars, such as heating and air conditioning repairs or heater installations and air conditioner installations are now only costing about fifty bucks! It’s crazy but the customers love it. However the cheap services didn’t last too long because eventually both companies were forced to raise their prices back up to stay in business. Now they have come to a truce and are keeping their prices even. The customers are of course now disappointed but many of them wound up pretty lucky, they got great deals that could last them years before they might need another repair. I too took an advantage of the low prices and purchased a whole new HVAC unit 50% off and had it installed for only fifty bucks. It is doing great so far and I’m really liking it.
There is nothing like the light from a fireplace
There is nothing like the light that comes from a beautiful fireplace.
I have always had a special fondness for fireplaces, I think that this is because I grew up with them as a kid.
My parents lived in a house with a huge fireplace and I have many fond memories of Christmas morning in front of the fireplace as well as sleeping in front of the fireplace on cold nights. We had a central heating system, but there is just something extra special about sleeping in front of the flames. Ever since I have made it my goal to continue the tradition and give my own children the same wonderful feeling that I had growing up. So when my wife and I were going house hunting we both decided to purchase one with a fireplace. I don’t want no gas or electric fireplace either, it has to be the traditional kind, the real deal. My wife and I did find a house we loved and it unfortunately didn’t have a fireplace, we discussed the option of having one put in by the local HVAC company, but in the end we decided that it was too big of a job and way too expensive so we continued to look for other houses. When we found the home we have now, we knew right then and there that it was the perfect one for us. Now our kids love the fireplace as much as I did when I was their age. It really has worked out wonderfully for our family and is perfect for the holidays.
