I benefit having a brother who works in construction. He found me the best contractors in the state when I wanted to build a new house last year. Building a house from the ground up is no easy process. Instead of working with an outside architect, I went with my brother’s recommended building contractor and looked at a number of house models they had on display at their office. All I had to do was look at the options and choose something I liked. If I found aspects of one model that I liked with another, I could specify exactly what features I wanted to create a hybrid model. In the end, this is how I proceeded with designing my house before construction started. Since the plot of land I purchased is in a rural area, I had to call a company to dig a well for water access. Because we’re 20 feet above sea level, that’s how far into the earth the well drillers had to go. This portion was completed while the house builders were still busy finishing the house. I had to call a heating and cooling company to install a furnace and air conditioner. They talked me into buying a gas powered boiler for my house, arguing that it’s a much better form of heat than fan-forced furnaces. The only problem is the boiler quit working a week after I moved in. And the company that installed it keeps making excuses for not getting right out here to fix it. I relented and ordered a temporary boiler rental while this incompetent HVAC dealer fixes their mistakes with the existing boiler. Since it’s the middle of the winter, I can’t even go a single day without a boiler running or my pipes will freeze.
