Should I buy a central air conditioner?

Do you think that I should buy a central air conditioner? I am really considering buying a central air conditioner right now.

If I were ever going to buy a central air conditioner for my house, this is the perfect time to buy it.

I am remodeling my house right now. I have lived in this house for a long time, and it has needed an update. I bought the house when it was already out of style, but it was all that I could afford at the time. Now that I have saved up more money, I know that I can afford a much nicer house. Instead, I decided that I would just remodel my house. This house has absolutely no central air conditioner. When I bought it, I decided to buy window air conditioners, and I have been using those window air conditioners ever since. I know that the window air conditioners are much more inconvenient. There are certainly places in my house where I wish I had a window air conditioner in the room. That is why I am considering a central air conditioner. I wouldn’t need to install window air conditioners every spring, and I would be perfectly content to have a cool house. Since I am gutting my house, the HVAC technicians would have a very easy time installing the central air conditioner. Sure, it would cost a little bit of money to buy a central air conditioner, but it seems worth it at this point. However, I am not sure if I actually need a central air conditioner at this point. For anyone that currently owns a central air conditioner, do you think that it is worth it? I have to make a decision quickly before they install the drywall.

The thermostat at my grandma’s house is terrible.

The thermostat in my grandma’s house is terrible, and I absolutely hate visiting.

Technically, it is not the thermostat’s fault that the house is so uncomfortable.

She is the one who doesn’t like using the central air conditioner much. At our house, the central air conditioner is one of the only reasons that we survive in the summer. We always have the thermostat for our central air conditioner set to 69 degrees, and that keeps us perfectly comfortable. I have only ever lived in a house with a central air conditioner, so I have never experienced anything different. The only time that I ever have to practically live without the central air conditioner is when I visit my grandma. My grandma does not like having the central air conditioner running. She bought a house years ago that came with a central air conditioner, but I am pretty sure that she never uses it. My grandma isn’t trying to save money by not using the central air conditioner, because she never minds using the furnace at the hottest temperatures during the winter. I just don’t think she likes cold air. Technically, she does have her central air conditioner set on, but the thermostat only turns the central air conditioner on once the temperature reaches above 85 degrees. While there might be a few days in the summer where the central air conditioner might turn on, this is unlikely to happen very often. Therefore, the central air conditioner doesn’t turn on much, and I practically melt every time that I visit my grandma. It makes me absolutely miserable, and that is why I don’t like visiting.

Old family home gets makeover including HVAC

Just when you think things just aren’t going to work out, hold on just a bit longer.

Keep that hope alive as things have a way of working out.

I do my best to keep my expectations in check. Seems like while I don’t always get what I want, I always get what I need. That song is so true. But when it came to continuing to live in apartments with lame HVAC equipment and loud neighbors, I was nearing the end of my rope. However, I did my best to keep my chin up and keep on plugging away. That paid off in a very big and most surprising way. A somewhat distant relation actually ended up leaving me a house. I mean one day, I’m living in an apartment. The next day, I’m a homeowner. Due to the fact that my career is just not all that high paying, I thought I was destined to rent forever. But thanks to a great uncle, I’ve got a house. Granted, the house needed a lot of work but it was structurally sound and sat on 10 acres. I could hardly believe it. In fact, I called the law office from the letterhead to be sure it wasn’t a joke. The house was indeed mine. And the first order of business to make it liveable was to get some good residential HVAC in that place. Since I wasn’t saving for a downpayment any longer, I could use my savings to get the sort of HVAC equipment I always wanted. And I have to say that owning my own HVAC equipment is as good as I thought it might be.

Air purifier stops the spring anxiety

Normally, this is the time of year that I start to get anxious because I so know what’s coming.

As the calendar flips to February, I get ever closer to spring.

And where I live, the pollen starts popping by mid to late February and that’s normally the time where I know I’m about to get whacked with seasonal allergies. And the spring allergies are the worst. I get some allergies other parts of the year but nothing like the spring. It’d be one thing if I could stay inside the air conditioning to avoid it. But that pollen follows me indoors. Well, thanks to the HVAC company, that’s not going to be the case this year. This spring, I’m finally going to at least have an indoor sanctuary from all of that pollen. Maybe this will maximize the allergy meds that I take so when I’m outside, it won’t be so bad. I know that inside my house this spring will not be an allergy problem. The HVAC company installed a whole home air purification system inside the HVAC unit. This is the sort of air purifier that doesn’t trap and remove airborne contaminants. No, this thing eliminates them. This type of air purifier uses high intensity UV light to destroy the allergens and other harmful airborne contaminants from the air. That means that I can come inside my home and not be bombarded by all the pollen that is already there or followed me inside. I love the feeling of not being worried that spring is around the corner. Who knows but maybe I’ll even enjoy all the greening up that comes with spring around here.

Moving to ductless HVAC just made more sense

The ductwork in the house was no good and the same was true for the rest of the HVAC unit.

It really didn’t matter to me that my new house was actually an old bungalow type place that had been a rental unit for a long time. It’s what I could afford and it was going to be home to me. Plus, after living so long with limited HVAC comfort and neighbors much too close, this was for sure an upgrade. I had a friend of mine who is a contractor give the place the once over. He came back with a glowing report as far as the structural integrity was concerned. The place had great bones and was in really good shape from that perspective. But the rest of the place was a mess which is why I was able to afford it. However, with the help of some friends and lots of study online, I was able to do most of the renovations myself. Yet, when it came to the heating and cooling, I turned to the HVAC professionals. Once the HVAC contractor completed his inspection, I got some news that I wasn’t expecting. The HVAC professional suggested that I go with a ductless multi split heating and cooling system. The ductwork in the house was no good and the same was true for the rest of the HVAC unit. It just made more sense both in time, effort and expense to go with the ductless heat pumps. That’s what I did and honestly, I like the ductless heat pumps better than any HVAC equipment I’ve ever owned actually. So don’t hesitate to consider using a ductless multi split system when you have to replace your HVAC equipment.

The heat pump is the boss, I just work here

But this place is absolutely filled with heat pump for all the HVAC cooling that we need here.

When you live somewhere that the heat pump is really for the affluent, it can be an eye opener to then see nothing but heat pumps when you move. That’s exactly the situation when I moved from the far north to the terrific weather of the south. Where I grew up and lived my adult life until recently, the only HVAC I worried about was the HVAC heating. Summer was sort of an afterthought. The winter, where I came from, forced one to be preparing almost all year to deal with it. I had a gas furnace and a wood stove. The gas furnace was the primary and the wood stove was for emergency and supplemental heating. But that thing kept me busy all year long in order to get enough wood together for the winter. Heat pump were for those rich folks who had central air conditioning in their homes. If it got too hot in my house, I simply put in the window air conditioner. But that wasn’t always the case with each summer. Well, it’s all opposite now. I moved south when I married a southern girl. Now, it’s all about a heat pump and the air conditioning. I’m not sure the HVAC heating comes on but a handful of times all winter. But this place is absolutely filled with heat pump for all the HVAC cooling that we need here. It’s for sure the land of the heat pump. There is no doubt about that. However, if I had to do it over again, I’d trade a gas furnace for a heat pump every single time.

Went all in on HVAC upgrade

It’s not like I was actively wishing the old HVAC unit dead or anything.

But I did start a fund once it was close to turning 20 years old.

And still the dang thing just wouldn’t die. Of course, the fact that we provided such consistent HVAC service for it over all those years was a big factor in its longevity. However, the old HVAC unit finally started showing the signs that it was at the end. The heat pump just ran all the time and the utility bill went right through the roof. So we had the HVAC technician come out to check it and he confirmed what we had expected. That meant that we could start planning the HVAC replacement. And that savings account had grown substantially so we were able to go into this HVAC process without too many financial constraints. And boy, did we ever go all in on the latest that residential HVAC has to offer. The heat pump was top of the line. This model came with the highest SEER rating we could find. This means that there aren’t many more heat pumps as efficient. We added to that a smart thermostat. I know for sure the smart thermostat will do a better job of monitoring the HVAC equipment than I ever could. Then we got zone controlled HVAC as well. That means we now have 5 separate HVAC zones in the house. Each HVAC zone comes with its own thermostat as well. I tip my cap to that old HVAC unit for sure. But man, am I ever glad it finally gave up the ghost because this new HVAC equipment is just simply amazing.

Couldn’t have done it without great HVAC guidance

When we bought this house, we knew that it was going to take plenty of time, money and effort to bring it back to its former glory.

And that was something that we really had to consider prior to pulling the trigger on buying this house.

We weren’t exactly spring chickens any longer. Wouldn’t we rather be sipping cocktails in the air conditioning instead? It was a legitimate considerations given the amount of work that we would be facing. But the challenge just didn’t outweigh our vision of what this house could be. And thanks to great help, patience, perseverance and some great HVAC, we crossed the finish line. The house is just a masterpiece and actually exceeds our expectations and wishes. But again, without the expert help we received, there’s no way we get this sort of result. One of the toughest things to do was to put modern residential HVAC in a house that wasn’t designed to have it. Now, previous owners had slapped together what might be recognized as residential HVAC but even that was a stretch. We sought and received the best help from the best HVAC contractor in the region. He ended up using a ductless multi split heating and cooling system in our home. It fits perfect with the aesthetics but delivers the highest quality heating and cooling we could ask for. I love the fact that since there are five ductless heat pumps strategically placed around the house, we can customize the heating and cooling. It’s just even better than I could have ever dreamed that it would be.

Got a smart thermostat the hard way

I have to state from the outset that being a mom is maybe the best thing I’ve ever done.

And I’m talking about for myself.

I simply can’t imagine life without my family and being a mom. That said, it’s not all that easy because I have three boys who are barely 5 years apart from youngest to oldest. If you have 3 boys in your house, you know what a challenge that can be. There is not exactly a lot of time to sit in the air conditioning with a glass of white wine and catch up with my husband about our days. No, it’s more a combination of being referee, nurse, cook, driver and on and on. It just never stops with these boys. But strangely, there is a part of me that is cherishing this time in their lives. And I even got an HVAC upgrade due to their hijinks. The boys, against my direction, will often be tossing some sort of ball around inside the house. And that is clearly against the rules. So when I heard a ball hit something and then that something shattered, it was followed by 3 pairs of feet running away. I came into the living room to find the thermostat to be laying in several pieces. So I called the HVAC company and had them install the smart thermostat that my husband had been resisting. And I let the boys take the heat from their father on that one while I fell deeply in love with the smart thermostat.

The simplest way to save on HVAC cooling is also the easiest

It’s getting to be the time of year when most everyone in my neighborhood will be flipping the thermostat from heating to cooling.

It’s not that there is much HVAC heating around here anyway.

But there is call for having the thermostat on heating during the winter even if it’s only occasional. In a month from now, the temperatures will start hitting the mid 80’s and with that comes plenty of heat pumps cranking up. Soon, I will open my door to hear a symphony of heat pumps all doing there HVAC cooling thing. But that’s not the way we do it in our house. While the air conditioning costs may be not to expensive in the spring, the summer is a different situation. Yet, if you keep the thermostat in the low 70’s in the spring, more often than not, that’s where it will be all summer and that’s going to get expensive. So many of my neighbors spend the equivalent of a luxury car payment on the air conditioning of their homes. It’s just ridiculous if you ask me. For us, we don’t spend on HVAC cooling like that and there is a simple reason for it. We just don’t jump for the air conditioning as soon as the temperatures start to climb. Nope, we actually try to throw a little nature in there and acclimate to the heat during the spring. Sure, by the time June gets here, we’re turning on the HVAC cooling. But that thermostat is parked in the mid 80’s for the heat of the day and then lowered a bit to sleep nicely. And we pay far, far less for HVAC cooling than our neighbors.
